NyQuil® vs. DayQuil®: Which Cold Medicine Is Better? Pharmacist Advice

When you have a cold or the flu, choosing the right over-the-counter cold medicine can be confusing. Many people search “NyQuil vs. DayQuil,” “What’s the difference between NyQuil and DayQuil?” or “Should I take DayQuil or NyQuil?”

As a pharmacist, these are some of the most common questions I hear. While both medications help relieve cold and flu symptoms, they’re designed for different times of the day and contain different ingredients. The key is choosing the product that best matches your symptoms.

Do You Really Need Every Ingredient?

Before deciding between DayQuil® and NyQuil®, ask yourself an important question:

Do you actually need a combination cold medicine?

As a pharmacist, I encourage patients to match the medication to their symptoms instead of automatically reaching for a product with multiple ingredients. For example:

• Fever or body aches only:  Consider Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen (if appropriate) may be all you need.

• Dry cough only: Consider Dextromethorphan a cough suppressant that is enough in most cases.

• Nasal congestion only: Consider a decongestant nasal spray short term such as Xylometazoline or Oxymetazoline.

• Runny nose that’s keeping you awake: Consider an antihistamine such as diphenhydramine or Cetirizine at bedtime may provide the relief you’re looking for.

  
  

If you’re experiencing several symptoms at once—such as a cough, fever, body aches, congestion, and a runny nose—then a combination product like DayQuil® or NyQuil® may make sense.

What’s the Difference Between NyQuil® and DayQuil®?

Although the packaging looks similar, these medications are designed for different times of the day.

DayQuil®: Best for Daytime Cold Relief

DayQuil® Cold & Flu is formulated to relieve common cold and flu symptoms while allowing most people to stay awake and productive.

It typically contains:

• Acetaminophen for fever, headaches, and body aches.

• Dextromethorphan to suppress cough.

• Phenylephrine to relieve nasal congestion. ( Warning: can raise blood pressure)

If you’re wondering, “Can I take DayQuil while I’m at work?” the answer is usually yes. Because it doesn’t contain a sedating antihistamine, it’s much less likely to make you sleepy.

NyQuil®: Best for Nighttime Cold Relief

NyQuil® Cold & Flu is designed for nighttime use when cold symptoms are making it difficult to sleep.

It contains:

• Acetaminophen for fever and body aches.

• Dextromethorphan for cough.

• Doxylamine, a sedating antihistamine that helps relieve a runny nose and sneezing while promoting sleep.

If you’re asking, “Does NyQuil make you sleepy?” the answer is yes—and that’s exactly why it’s intended for nighttime use.

Because of the drowsiness it causes, you should not take NyQuil before driving, working, or operating machinery.

Can You Take DayQuil® and NyQuil® on the Same Day?

That’s really a good question!

For many healthy adults, the answer is yes, as long as you carefully follow the dosing instructions and do not exceed the recommended daily amount of acetaminophen. They also come in a Single package that contains both.

Remember, both DayQuil and NyQuil contain acetaminophen, so avoid taking additional products like Tylenol® or other combination cold medicines unless you’ve confirmed they don’t contain acetaminophen.

DayQuil® May Not Be Right for Everyone

Because DayQuil contains phenylephrine, it may not be the best choice for people with certain medical conditions, including high blood pressure or some heart conditions.

If congestion isn’t one of your symptoms, you may not need a decongestant at all.

NyQuil® Can Interact With Other Medications

NyQuil contains doxylamine, a sedating antihistamine that can increase drowsiness when combined with:

• Sleep medications

• Anxiety medications

• Opioid pain medications

• Alcohol

Older adults should also be cautious because sedating antihistamines can increase the risk of falls, confusion, and next-day drowsiness.

My Recommendations

If you have multiple cold or flu symptoms, both products can be good choices when used appropriately.

Choose DayQuil® if you:

• Need relief during the day.

• Want to stay alert at work or school.

• Have fever, body aches, cough, and congestion.

Choose NyQuil® if you:

• Need nighttime symptom relief.

• Have trouble sleeping because of your cough or runny nose.

• Can safely take a medication that causes drowsiness.

If you only have one or two symptoms, consider treating those symptoms individually instead of using a multi-symptom cold medicine.
