If you need daytime cough relief without feeling sleepy, let me first ask: Is your cough dry, or are you coughing up mucus?

The answer depends on your type of cough.

Dry Cough: Non-Drowsy Options

For a mild cough that comes from the throat, try Cough Drops, they help soothe the throat, and provide a protective layer which can help reduce irritation and cough.

Honey-based cough syrup can also be used to soothe the throat and may help relieve the cough symptoms. Keep in mind that some honey syrups are medicated with other ingredients.

If you still need to suppress the cough, Dextromethorphan can reduce coughing with minimal sedation based on patient’s tolerance.

You can also try Delsym® 12 Hour Cough Relief, if you want an extended-release dextromethorphan product that provides cough suppression for up to 12 hours.

Keep in mind that dextromethorphan can still cause dizziness or drowsiness in some people. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you.

Productive Cough: Non-Drowsy Options

If you are coughing up mucus or feel chest congestion, the goal is to loosen and clear the mucus rather than stop the cough completely.

Options include staying hydrated so start with plenty of fluids. Staying hydrated can help keep mucus thinner and easier to clear. You may also use a Mist Humidifier to help dissolve the mucous.

If you’re still not getting relief, try Guaifenesin 400mg IR, an expectorant that helps loosen mucus and is generally considered non-drowsy.

It also comes in Extended-release options include Mucinex® ER 600 mg and Mucinex® ER 1200 mg.

What Should You Avoid if You Don’t Want to Feel Sleepy?

Check the Active Ingredients section. Many nighttime cough products contain sedating antihistamines such as doxylamine or diphenhydramine. Chlorpheniramine can also cause drowsiness.

Be cautious with combination products because they may contain one of these antihistamines.

My Recommendation

For a non-drowsy relief of dry cough, start with lozenges, honey-based cough syrup, or warm fluids. If needed, consider Delsym® 12 Hour Cough Relief or another dextromethorphan-only product.

For a productive cough, start with fluids and consider a guaifenesin expectorant if you need medication.

Pharmacist Tip

People respond to medications differently, so drowsiness may be more pronounced in some individuals, especially those taking other medications or living with certain health conditions. If you take other medicines or have an underlying health condition, ask a pharmacist or your doctor before using a cough product.

Found OTC  is your place to find smart over-the-counter solutions for common daily conditions, such as Headache, Constipation, Allergies and more, designed by a pharmacist.
